September 16-18, 2016 -- Camp Justis - Powhatan, VA | Capital Bike Trail - Henrico, VA

Bike Riding on the Capital Trail

This month's campout was originally scheduled to be whitewater rafting at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC.  However, after the unexpected death of a park visitor due to a brain-eating amoeba, the whitewater portion of the park was closed back in June.  Out of an abudnance of caution, we decided to scrap those plans altogether and go with a backup.

Instead, we decided to continue pursuit of the cycling merit badge.  This weekend's trek was an ambitious (especially for our first year scouts) 25+ mile round-trip segment of the Capital Bike Trail from Dorey Park in Henrico, VA traveling East toward Williamsburg, VA and back.

Cycling Merit Badge Requirements

On Sunday morning, after getting the camp cleaned up and doing some trail cleanup for Webelos Day and the October Court of Honor, we finally got a chance to launch the rockets that we were originally supposed to launch during our May campout to Wallops Island Space Center.  Launches were scrubbed on that trip due to heavy thunderstorms.  This was the final requirement for the Space Exploration merit badge.  Since this merit badge was strung out over many months due to weather delays, we will compile the list of everyone who completed it and issue merit badges at the next Court of Honor.
